CHAPTER THREE
Three full, wonderful days they were. They stayed at the Hotel de Boulogne, behind locked doors, going out in the darkness of the late evening. One night, they went to dine on the river. While smiling contentedly at one another in the moonlight, Leon saw a silk ribbon lying on the floor of the boat. The boatman examined it.
"Ah, yes, that belongs to a party I took out the other day. A lively group of ladies and gentlemen they were. One of them in particular, a tall handsome man ... Adolphe ... Dodolphe ... perhaps Rodolphe."
Emma was shocked to hear his name.
"What's the matter, dear?" said Leon.
"Nothing, it's just a bit cold."
" ... The ladies were quite fond of him, too!" added the old boatman.
At last, Madame Bovary had to say goodbye to her lover. He would send his letters to Madame Rollet, the nurse.
As they parted, Leon wondered why she was so interested in this Power of Attorney business.
